Your Stage Presence is Writing Checks Your Website Can't Cash
I was on a strategy call recently with a client, a seasoned keynote speaker.
During that call, he revealed why he decided to book a session with me.
After one of his recent keynote presentations, he had just gotten off stage and an agent who happened to be in the room approached him.
The agent said, "On stage, you are magnetic. Compelling. Humorous. Expertise-driven. You own the room."
Then the agent paused.
"But I looked you up online before I came over here. And honestly? Your website looks like someone who woke up yesterday and said, 'Oh, I think I'm going to start a speaker business - let me just slap something together real quick.'"
Ouch.
The agent wasn't trying to be mean. He was genuinely confused. He couldn't see the expert he saw on stage with the amateur he saw on the screen.
There was a massive disconnect. And that disconnect is a problem.
The Master on Stage, the Stranger on Screen
This is a challenge that most experts, let alone speakers, possess.
You spend countless hours gaining expertise and experience. You then translate it to a talk, and put in the massive amount of work to turn these insights into a compelling and actionable message. Then, you spend even more time working on how to present it in a captivating way from the stage.
Over time, you become undeniable in person.
But, when it comes to how you translate your value through your online presence? It’s an afterthought - and you look like you’re stuck in Phase 1 of building a business.
It's filled with:
A mish-mosh of selfies taken in hotel rooms.
Semi-professional photos of you holding a mic but with no audience visible.
Basic headshots that capture your face but miss your energy, essence and passion for how you transform the lives of those you serve.
When a prospect sees you live, they buy you. But when a prospect finds you online, they buy what they see.
If what they see signals "Amateur," they assume your fee is "Amateur." You’re effectively writing checks with your stage presence that your website cannot cash.
And that, ultimately, leads to you losing 50/50 calls with other experts who position themselves as the obvious choice.
The "After-Market" Hemorrhage
The danger of this isn't just about losing the next gig. It's about losing the After-Market.
Most speakers don't just sell speeches. They sell consulting, workshops, books, and advisory retainers.
The speech is the teaser. Your online presence is where they dive in deeper to learn more about how you can help them once the smoke machines, IMAGS and spotlights are struck from the ballroom space.
If the teaser you provide isn’t positioned visually on the same level as your digital footprint, doubt is cast in the minds of the decision makers.
As a result, you’re losing the high-ticket backend sales because your visual evidence doesn't support the premium price tag.
They’ll simply move on to the next expert in your space that does capture their attention.
How to Close the Gap
The fix for the Speaker's Paradox isn't rocket science, but it requires intention and consistency.
Your stage work doesn’t need fine-tuning, but the way in which you present your stage work, as well as your after-speech services does.
This means building a visual story that matches your stage energy, such as:
Capturing the "Magnetic" Proof:
Photos of you connecting with audience members. Photos of you mid-laugh, mid-insight, mid-moment. Proof that you command attention, not just a podium.
Signaling the "Expertise":
Visuals of you facilitating workshops, trainings, consultations and certification programs with high-level clients. Photos of you in the boardroom, in front of whiteboards, flipcharts and slides, not just on the stage. Proof that your value extends beyond the keynote.
Visualizing the "Compelling" Detail:
Your proprietary frameworks, your methodologies, your IP turned into visual assets. Not just bullet points on a slide, but tangible proof of your thinking.
And this isn’t a one-time thing; session after session, it’s essential that you collect visual evidence of these high-impact moments with clients and share them online, both through a professional lens, as well as through smartphone images.
When it comes to photos taken with a phone, another bonus is to collect images from the participants themselves, further cementing in the minds of decision makers that you’re creating environments where the experience you provide is not only memorable enough to be photographed, but valuable enough, as well.
The goal by sharing all of these images is to position you as in demand, working consistently, offering premium services at premium rates.
When your online presence matches the energy people experience in person, the disconnect evaporates.
The decision maker doesn't have to reconcile two different versions of you. They see one expert, one message, one undeniable authority, no matter where they discover you initially.
The Reality Check
Go look at your website right now. Open it on your phone.
Now, imagine you just walked off stage to a standing ovation.
Does that website look like the home of the person who just got that applause? Or does it look like the home of someone who is "just getting started"?
If there is a gap, you’re leaking opportunities to get on more stages.
You've done the hard work to be undeniable in person. Don't let your digital presence be the reason they forget you.
